This image of Irene was part of a large set of her photos featuring the family home and all its new amenities, including 2 telephones and running water in the bathroom and kitchen. The 1970s in Myanmar – when this image was taken – were difficult times for the country, as the military government flexed its power by nationalizing private firms and expelling large groups of “foreign” residents (aka Chinese Burmese or Indian Burmese). During this decade, the country’s economy floundered. Irene’s family may have been one of the lucky ones relatively protected from this demise, perhaps due to having beneficial connections or the help of a legacy.
