Hello @newyorkerphoto, this is Lukas @lukas.birk, on the 5th day of sharing images from the Myanmar Photo Archive, highlighting everyday life in Myanmar of the past, a country that was closed for several decades with little visual information revealed about its society and culture. The series of images I will share today are all about fashion in the 70s. Though not much was exported from Myanmar in this decade, certain things were imported – a sense of fashion, beauty, style and trends emulating the West and other ASEAN countries. This image comes from a beauty pageant in Yangon in 1971. While it was quite rare for women to bare their legs publicly, the sheer top and pronounced brassiere were the height of fashion in Myanmar at the time.
