Fashion in Myanmar of the past was clearly not only about longyis. A “longyi” is a sheet of cloth that is sewn into a cylindrical shape and worn around the waist, similar to the style in India, Bangladesh, or Malaysia. Both men and women wear them and each sex wears a different kind of pattern. Though the 1970s may have featured Myanmar’s closed-door policy, the young people of the time were still finding ways to have fun – swimming, sports, and going to the cinema were all popular forms of entertainment. Their parents may have been more conservative in their attitude and dress, but children of the 70s in Myanmar as all over the world were intent on breaking the rules, even if only in a photograph.
