The young woman in this photo from 1972 differs from most female portraits of this decade in the Myanmar Photo Archive – she is not flaunting the gorgeous, thick black hair women from Myanmar are famous for, but is instead showing off her jewelry. Myanmar is rich in natural resources; emeralds, pearls, jade and especially rubies abound. Much like in other countries, jewelry is a sign of wealth and success. But in Myanmar, it is also an especially important status symbol. Even today, in the western state of Rakhine, women wear solid gold bangles to show their position in society – the more you wear, the wealthier you are.
